Barclays Africa and BYM share a common ambition to realise the potential of the youth across the continent, and in doing so unlock lasting growth for the communities in which we operate.

Today, advanced technologies, big data and crowdsourcing are shaping our future. How will this impact Africa, how will this shape Africa going forward? How will Africa’s youth and communities use technology and innovation to develop solutions to our continent’s greatest challenges. Africa has a long standing legacy for embracing innovation. According to the GSMA Mobile Economy: sub-Saharan Africa 2014 report, smart phones in Africa will increase by 629% between 2013 and 2020. Similarly, mobile phone usage will increase by 62% over the same period. Africa is also leading the adoption of mobile money platforms – if we compare the population of developed markets, just 2% of the population have mobile money accounts, while 12% of sub-Saharan adults are using their cell phones as handheld mobile banks *.

We at Barclays Africa are excited to be part of the journey in unlocking Africa’s potential and the opportunities therein. We are striving to be more than a bank, we are actively developing solutions that help people achieve their ambitions and facilitate greater, more inclusive prosperity for current and future generations.

We have realised that in order for us to be relevant for tomorrow, we need to be innovative today and align our business to optimally support the growing needs of our clients. Over the last year we have been working with BYM to help us come up with solutions that would make us an Employer of choice as well as supporting creative and sustainable ideas and business solutions as well as exciting new ways of working – all this with the aim to be more than a Bank.

I had no notion beforehand that Barclays was in any way different from any other bank, but this weekend showed me just how wrong I was. I honestly see them now as an innovative company that seems to have an exceptional vision and that tries to do truly interesting and worthwhile activities to support our country. I'm very impressed.

My understanding of Barclays has changed in a sense that it is not only a company that provides banking and financial services to individuals and business entities but as an institution that has committed itself in the growth of the various stakeholders in the regions that it operates in, whether it's by investing in the growth of effective young leaders or in fast tracking solutions to the various socio-economic issues faced by the country. It is an organisation that has understood that investing in young people who have shown potential has the capability of having an exponential impact in the growth of the nation and is not afraid of doing so.
