Absa wins Deal and Deal Maker of the Year

 2/20/2013
Last night, the corporate and investment banking division of Absa Bank Limited (Absa), member of Barclays, was awarded ‘Deal of the Year’, ‘Individual DealMaker of the Year’ and ‘Top Sponsor by Deal Value’ at the DealMakers annual gala awards dinner for 2012.

The highly sought-after ‘Deal of the Year’ was awarded to the firm for the merger of Barclays Africa and Absa Group operations valued at R18.3bn. The transaction, lead by Klaus-Dieter Kaempfer, head of Corporate Development at Absa, represents a critical step in realising the group’s Africa strategy.

Craig Brewer, head of M&A at Absa’s corporate and investment banking division walked away with the laurels for ‘Individual DealMaker of the Year’. Two of Brewer’s colleagues were also nominated in the category

In a statement issued after the awards dinner DealMakers indicated that Brewer’s selection was largely motivated by the role he played in securing the sale by Rio Tinto and Anglo American of their 74% interest in Palabora Copper to a consortium led by the Hebei Iron and Steel Group of China, and which included the Industrial Development Corporation.

The Sponsors team at Absa’s corporate and investment banking division also won ‘Top Sponsor by Deal Value’ - for the second consecutive year - with deals valued at R66.1bn.

Furthermore, the bank was also well placed in the overall M&A by deal value category, coming a credible third in a closely contested result.

“It’s always very pleasing when we are recognised for excelling at what we do, given that we are helping our clients achieve their goals in the right way,” said Stephen van Coller, Chief Executive of Absa’s corporate and investment banking division.

“Our colleagues across the breadth of our global investment banking platform, including M&A, Corporate Development, regional and sector coverage teams, as well as our Sponsors team, have done us proud, as we strive to become the premier ‘Go-To’ corporate and investment bank in Africa,” said Philip Lindop, head of African Investment Banking.

DealMakers is South Africa’s only magazine focused exclusively on tracking and ranking corporate activity and M&A in the country’s, and the continent’s, corporate finance sector. Candidates are nominated by their peers in the M&A industry. The final selection is made by an independent selection panel.
