Hasnen Varawalla appointed Head of Corporate Finance for Barclays Africa Investment Banking Division

 11/19/2013

Barclays Africa Group Limited (Barclays Africa) has appointed Hasnen Varawalla as Head of Corporate Finance, within the bank’s Africa investment banking division’s advisory team. Varawalla will report to Philip Lindop, head of Africa Investment Banking at Barclays Africa.

Varawalla has over 18 years of investment banking experience. He joins from Renaissance Capital, where he was Deputy Head of Investment Banking and Co-Chairman of the Macquarie-Renaissance Infrastructure Fund.

Varawalla has considerable on-the-ground emerging markets experience, having led the African investment banking business at Renaissance Capital, in addition to being involved in several, important advisory and ECM transactions for African clients over the past seven years.

According to Lindop, Varawalla’s appointment serves to underscore Barclays Africa’s commitment to clients interested in Africa, as the bank continues to invest in and expand its advisory and execution capabilities.

“Africa is witnessing a period of sustained economic growth, driven by urbanisation, as well as the development of natural resources and infrastructure. As a result, the region is increasingly a key focus for our global clients, but also offers considerable opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs across the continent to prosper,” said Lindop.

“Hasnen will play a central role in assisting the investment banking team to realise the firm’s ambition of becoming the premier ‘Go-To’ wholesale bank in Africa.”

Commenting on the appointment, Crispin Osborne, Head Continental Europe and Africa Investment Banking at Barclays, said: “Hasnen will lead the corporate finance team in its delivery of world class investment banking execution capability, working closely with the global sector coverage and in-country bankers, as we seek to expand our business across the continent, by unlocking cross-border advisory and financing opportunities for clients in Africa.”

Varawalla, who was attracted to Barclays Africa owing to its extensive African footprint and the longevity of its deep in-country relationships, will be based in Johannesburg.
